Great Green Idea: Green Jewelry: Conflict Free Diamond

Conflict Free Diamond

The idea of conflict free diamonds was brought to the forefront of public consciousness by the Leonardo DiCaprio movie "Blood Diamond".

Conflict free refers to diamonds that are certified as not being violence, human right violations and a number of other criteria. However, conflict free does not necessarily mean sustainable harvested or made.

Diamonds are generally found in mines or river beds. Due to the nature of the value of these gems, buying and trading of them used to be and still is a dangerous business. When purchasing conflict free jewelry, you must make sure that the company is reputable and they have more than just conflict free. It is helpful for these jewelry companies to be fair trade licensed.

To ensure that your diamond was harvested in a safe and environmental way, try looking into synthetic diamonds. These are made in a lab and use the same elements that create the gem in the outside world. In many circumstances they are more "perfect" than other real diamonds. Purchasing these diamonds will ensure that they truly are conflict free diamonds.
