Creating a Green Mentor Program

Increasing public knowledge of eco-sense is needed to remind the community how necessary it is to promote green awareness. Creating a mentoring program is a wonderful way to teach green concepts as well as gain new understanding from individuals involved.

Key Focus

The focus of the program should give important details of why each individual is needed to help the environment. The main focus of the mentoring program can include one or several areas. The program should provide benefits that are readily seen by the participants.

Supporting the Cause

Concrete evidence is needed to support the cause of creating a "greener" community. Surveying the needs of the community is one way to provide basic information to those involved in the mentoring program. Speaking with individuals or companies that specialize in eco-friendly solutions is also another option.

Partnership

Partnership with companies that promote eco-friendly solutions can bring even greater results to creating a green mentor program. Such companies may be willing to help promote, create and maintain programming. Partnership will add to the foundation and support to the program.

Support

Support for the program can come from the partnering companies as well as individuals who will commit to helping set up and act as mentor's to the group members. Support is needed for any program to be successful. Some people may agree with your program but not be willing to take some time and effort to help.

Programming

Program contents can cover a variety of projects or focus on one or two areas of need. Variety throughout the program can enhance continued participation by individuals. Some communities may need to have a more focused effort in one project area.

Consider use of a variety of tools to teach including handouts, videos, Power Point Presentations as well as discussion. If possible, use as many of the five senses as possible (seeing, hearing, and so on).

Evaluation

Evaluation of the program will be needed so that adjustments can be made if needed. Program participants can help in the evaluation process by answering a short survey about the program. Space can also be added to the survey allowing for comments.

Year Round Program

Depending on the time available and individual commitment, providing a year round program is an option for the community. Meetings can take place at different intervals such as weekly, monthly, and so on.

Topics to Consider

Depending on the focus of the green mentoring program, various areas can be included within the program guidelines. Community earth friendly information, recycling techniques, planting trees as well as basic green living tips can be taught. Consider the needs of the community and work to make a difference in the lives of others.
