Great Green Idea: Green Eating: Easy Ways to Decrease your Grocery Bill

Easy Ways to Decrease your Grocery Bill

Easy ways to decrease your grocery bill will help to save time and money for your family. Many of us have heard of shopping alone and using coupons to save money. But, what other ways are available to families to save money?

Drink More Water

Drinking more water is healthier as well as a money saver. Replacing soft drinks and costly drink alternatives with water is much better to society as well. Sugar or artificial sweetener consumption can be reduced drastically.

Using Local Markets

Using local farmer markets can provide fresh and money saving alternatives to packaged or canned fruits and vegetables. In turn, this will reduce waste of packaging as well as provide increased nutritional benefits to the family unit. Bulk purchased can be made for larger families or split between several families.

Creating a Garden

Creating a garden at home for vegetables used on a regular basis can cut grocery costs down. Once an area is created and used for gardening, it can be reused each year increasing cost savings over time. Garden vegetables take time and patience, but the rewards can be great.

Fruits & Vegetables

Families can include more fruit and vegetable based meals to decrease grocery expenditures. Adding fresh fruits and vegetables adds fiber to the diet and is much more eco-friendly. Look for items that are in season to cut costs even more. Items in season can also be canned or dehydrated for future consumption.

Smaller Servings

Using smaller servings during family meals can nearly cut the grocery bill in half for some families. In the United States, food consumption is at an all time high creating health issues for the next generation. Serve foods on small plates and eat only until satisfied (not stuffed and hurting).

Planning

Planning your grocery trip can save time and money. Bring a shopping list of necessary items, cutting out items not really needed (cookies, chips, so on). Know what your weakness is at the store and avoid it at all costs. Knowing the store layout can also help your shopping experience.

Some shoppers like to keep a price book of items used regularly. The book will list grocery items and costs at a particular store. It can also include the size of the item to help with clarification of details. This can be particularly useful with large families to ensure cost savings.

Credit Card Points

Credit card points programs can be a useful tool for families. Points are earned by purchases made on the credit cards. Some programs available may be better than others. Only use reputable companies and always pay the bill in full if possible. Also, be aware that some companies charge to be enrolled in their points program. Shop wisely in this situation.
