Great Green Idea: Green Fashion: Eco-Friendly Clothing Care

Eco-Friendly Clothing Care

Using eco-friendly clothing care is necessary to preserve clothing items. Clothing items should be available for use upon demand without challenges. Proper storage techniques are essential. Clothes that are never worn should be sold, donated or given away to others in need.

Storage

Eco-friendly storage will help you keep clothing in great shape as well as fresh. There are a variety of ways to help with your storage needs. How can you improve your storage?

Hanging clothes in the closet can be a real time saver, if done properly. Arrange similar clothing items together, such as all tops together in one section. Place items worn regularly in a location that is easy to access. Fresh air should be able to circulate around clothing items in the closet.

Keep belts, shoes and other like items together as well. If needed, add a door hook on the frame of your closet door to hang belts or bags in a nice fashion. Storage of clothing items in drawers should also be in a nice orderly fashion with similar items placed together.

Soiled items should be placed in a separate area to keep other clothing items fresh. Dresser tops should also be organized and care-free. Are their items on your dresser that can be stored away?

Using Cardboard Boxes

Using cardboard boxes for storing items is an earth friendly solution to storage needs. If placing clothing items in cardboard boxes, place acid-free tissue paper between the cardboard and clothing. This will ensure clothing will last longer by minimizing contact with wood pulp chemicals.

Taking Care of Clothing

If you take care of clothing, they will last longer and save you money over the years. If you have more clothing than you know what to do with, take time to sort through clothing items. Pull any items that have not been worn in the last year or two. Consider finding someone who may be in need of clothing items. Donations can also be made to a variety of places including Salvation Army, local women's shelters, Goodwill as well as other organizations.

Eco-friendly Washing

Eco-friendly washing products are available to help the environment and save the earth. Consider looking for products that will help clothing last longer as well as are more naturally safe to use for your family.

Adding a small amount of salt to the washing cycle can brighten clothes naturally as well as adding a limited amount of baking soda to freshen clothes. Using cold water to wash will save money for the family unit.

Limited Drying

Limiting drying time can add life to clothing articles. Also, turning clothes inside out during the washing and drying cycle can help get the most from your clothing. Hanging clothes outside to dry is definitely an eco-friendly solution to drying!
