The concept of wearing green was big news when it was first introduced many years ago. Lately it has been proven that this was not just a fashion fad. News about natural clothing has made its way back to the front page. Although there as been a marked increase in people who live green lifestyles, some have said that there is no longer an interest in environmentally friendly apparel. Yet time and again reports indicate that the exact opposite appears to be true.
A long time designer of eco friendly clothing designer gave an interview recently to discuss details about her new natural clothing line. Although she has been designing these types of garments for over a dozen years, she did admit she felt that in interest green fashions had waned in the last few years. She reasoned that it could be because eco friendly clothes had become cost prohibitive in recent years because of the downturn in the economy. Nonetheless, she will be showing her line of clothing, including an outfit designed with solar panels, at an upcoming fashion show in Vienna.
One popular fashion website reports that eco friendly clothing is the new fashion trend in back-to-school wear. While going green has not replaced skinny jeans and leggings in the classroom, it is very popular in schools across the country. This could be due to the fact that natural clothing for children is now more affordable since it has made its way to stores like Walmart and Gap. Formerly, organic clothes could only be found in pricey boutiques and were not within the budget of the average middle class family.
The potential to tap into the potential of the eco friendly clothing movement is demonstrated by a hip new designer on a mission to make it cool to be fashion sustainable. His company supports fair trade by hiring seamstresses from a refugee camp in Ghana and paying them fair trade living wages. In addition, his company donates 40% of its profits to a foundation which supports and educates the region in which his employees live. First launched in 2009, the fashion line is a trendy mix of Ghanaian and New York styles. A fashion event will be hosted by this company to promote awareness of its natural clothing line and other important social concerns.
A local Pennsylvania police department recently jumped on the eco friendly clothing bandwagon when it unveiled a new green uniform. The uniforms stay dry without need of a raincoat. They are made with a 65% poly and 35% cotton blend from recycled bottles removed from landfills. The officers report that the uniforms keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They also state that the uniforms have the exact same feel as their old ones. As a further tribute to the maintaining the environments, the uniforms require no dry cleaning.
All reports indicate that the there is an increased momentum in the green movement. Environmentally safe goods, including eco friendly clothing, are in no danger of extinction.
