Great Green Idea: Green Eating: Green Cuisine and Your Health

Green Cuisine and Your Health

There are a large number of reasons why so many people insist that eating green is the best way to get the nutrition they need. It is true the consummation of most common food leaves a vast negative impact on the environment. Billions of tons of dangerous gases are emitted each year from the processing and packaging of meat and meat products. Large amounts of energy and other resources are used in their preparation and cooking. But of equal or more importance is the impact that adopting this way of eating has on health.

Skeptics have questioned whether eating green really makes a difference in the health of an individual. Years of study have concluded that there are in fact many health benefits to eating green cuisine instead of a less pure diet. People that have limited or eliminated meat from their diets have lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels. In addition, serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and dementia are reported less in vegetarians. Clear evidence shows that fewer episodes of depression and persistent drug use are other recognized benefits of a meat free diet. For these reasons, vegetarian cooking has become popular among people who are concerned about their health. But one other reason some may hesitate to make this change in their diet is because they are concerned if it is possible to get necessary nutrients from a diet that does not include meat.

There are a variety of ways that people express a vegetarian lifestyle. Fruitarians eat only food like seeds and nuts. Others only use milk, eggs and other dairy products in their vegetarian cooking. Vegans eat no animal products and quite often incorporate soya dishes in their meal planning. For some, all of these differences may discourage an attempt to make any real change in their eating habits.

One common misconception about eating meat is that it is the only food source that contains essentials like protein, fiber and other vitamins needed to maintain good health. In reality, meat does not contain fiber at all. Fiber, which is needed for proper digestion, is only found in food which is plant based. Eating green does supply nutrients that are needed to sustain good health. For instance, soya dishes are excellent sources of protein. Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale are full of protein as well as iron. These are good substitutes for red meat and eggs which raise cholesterol and elevate blood pressure among other things. There is also the option of taking vitamin supplements to ensure that nutritional needs are met.

Whatever choice is made to express a change eating habits the wise decision would be to seek professional dietary and nutritional advice. Special health conditions like recovering from sickness and pregnancy would also dictate consulting a medical professional to decide the safest choices for eating green during this time. There are tools are readily available to teach how to prepare healthy green cuisine, such the food pyramid and other resources. The first step for anyone who is considering changing to this way of eating would be to learn the true facts and then make an informed decision best suited to their circumstances.
