Great Green Idea: Green Living: How to Conserve Water Intelligently

How to Conserve Water Intelligently

The bad news is that water isn't the infinite resource we were all brought up to think it was. Every single day, more scientific evidence is being discovered which point to the fact that this blue planet is becoming less blue. The climate crisis has wrought devastating changes to the hydrological cycle, resulting in extreme weather events that are wrecking havoc all across the globe. Arid deserts are increasing in size, and the gigantic ice glaciers that are responsible for storing a large portion of the earth's freshwater resources are melting into the oceans. As the global population continues to rise, the issues surrounding the sustainability of our water supply are fast becoming more urgent.

The good news is that every household, including yours, can contribute to solving the emerging water crisis. Within each household are various opportunities for water conservation. The most important step that one must take is to commit oneself to the effort of conserving more water. Once you undertake this commitment, you are bound to become more conscious of wasteful practices and activities in your household which you can stop. To help you out in your quest, let's look at some of the major ways by which you can conserve water at home. These will help you get started in identifying opportunities to conserve water, and help you act on your new-found commitment to fight for our blue planet.

Stop wasting water

This really involves nothing more than common sense. To conserve water, the simplest thing to do is to stop wasting it. It's not too easy, however, to identify wasteful practices that have already become part of our daily habit. You therefore have to observe yourself every time you're using water and ask yourself whether any volume is being needlessly consumed without having been put to good use. If the answer to that is "yes", then you have to figure out what alternative methods you can use in order to keep the water from being wasted. Among the most common alternatives are: using a tumbler when brushing your teeth, washing your car with a pail and soapy sponge instead of a garden hose, and using a water basin to wash vegetables and thaw frozen meat in.

Be on the look-out for water-efficient devices

These can range from water-efficient appliances to smaller devices that allow you to calibrate the flow of running water. The most popular devices in the market today are low-flow shower heads and faucets, as well as trigger-controlled hose heads. These devices can easily be installed and are available at very reasonable prices. They allow you to lessen and control the amount of water that you use for your daily activities. Apart from these devices, you may also want to research on water-efficiency tricks and methods that you can apply at home. If you have a garden, for example, there are various tricks that you can employ in order to cut down your garden's water consumption.

Use other water sources

Not all of our water-consuming activities require treated water that comes from the tap. Activities such as gardening, washing your car, and house cleaning can make do with other sources of water. Collect rainwater with large barrels or pails, and recycle water that can still be used for these kinds of activities. The water that you've used for washing vegetables, for instance, can be great for watering your plants. When using a washing machine, try to collect the water that is used for the second or third rinse cycle and reuse it for washing your car or cleaning the house.
