Great Green Idea: Green Fashion: In Style; In Green

In Style; In Green

Today's fashion includes clothing made out of natural fiber, and green design has boomed since 2005. Those who seek ecofriendly clothing were limited in the past. However lots of options have emerged since the demand rose. Natural fiber, recycled fiber, and unconventional thinking have improved green design.

As trends in fashion change designers must change their thinking in order to keep up. Below are some answers to common wonders such as: what organic is, definition of natural and recycled fiber, comfort levels, and availability.

What is organic exactly? Organic is anything that is pesticide and insecticide free or that reduces the carbon footprint, the negative effects on the Earth. This pertains to vegetables as well as green design clothing. From the material used to dyes used to color must be organic in order to be given an ecofriendly tag. Natural fiber is fiber that is produced either by animal products or plant products. Cotton, wool, hemp, bamboo, and silk are all examples of natural materials. Any of these are good choices because they are renewable.

Hemp used to a bad reputation because of its association with marijuana in years past but is becoming more likeable. Hemp is commonly used in necklaces. Cotton has been used for years in fashion trends. Wool has had a stigma for being itchy; however camel hair, angora, and cashmere are all types of wool and have dispelled that myth. Bamboo fiber is made from the pulp of bamboo grass and resembles cotton. Most popular item made from bamboo is socks.

Recycled fiber is fiber made from recycled materials. Candy wrappers, juice pouches, recycled clothing, used tires, plastic bottles, and even iron have been incorporated in green design lately. From handbags to shoes, these materials are finding their way out of trash dumps and unto store shelves. It may sound crazy, but people said the same thing about Einstein years ago. Now he is considered a genius. Designers like Peter Ingwersen and Casey Larkin are being compared in the same likeness. Ecofriendly garments are available worldwide. From high end couture to everyday rocking t shirts are available. Many department stores carry some fashion with an ecofriendly tag.

There are several online stores offering natural fiber sweaters to green design accessories. Organic wedding gowns and prom dresses are becoming popular. Unless told, most cannot distinguish the difference between organic and synthetic. It feels the same.

In closing, organic fashion is here and is going to stay. Natural fiber and green design may sound weird or even a little like hippies but is a good idea. Designs range from high end to casual. Materials for ecofriendly clothing range from cotton to silk. Recycled items can be redesigned into garments such as used tires made into sandals, or candy wrappers made into handbags. Ecofriendly clothing is just as comfy as traditional clothing and helps Earth. Supply and demand dictates what stores offer customers so more and more stores offer some design line that is ecofriendly. Today's trash just might be tomorrow's newest fashion.
