Keeping the Cost Down While Providing a Quality Education at Home

Keeping cost down while providing a quality education at home is possible. Buying unneeded curriculum can be very expensive. Researching the needs of your home school is a great pre-planning tool. Quality education is not dependent on how much is spent in supplies and curriculum to school at home.

Curriculum Choices

Families that home school must decide how they are going to teach at home and what materials to use. Curriculum comes in a variety of forms. Curriculum generally comes in the form of hard back textbook sets or computerized curriculum. The price of each brand varies from very inexpensive to very pricey.

Lesson Plan Sites

Lesson plans sites are a wonderful tool for the home school environment. Some sites are free to use while other charge a monthly or yearly subscription fee. There are sites that are well worth it that are loaded will all kinds of information to help with teaching needs. Storage space is minimal for this option with the ability to print materials as needed.

Home School Groups

Home School Groups are a great resource to the home school unit. Families help other families along the road of instructional journey. Each family is unique in what works best for them. Support can be given by joining a home school group. Other families are usually willing to allow you to see the curriculum they are using and find out how it is working for them.

Local Library Resources

Local libraries are an inexpensive tool, since they are usually free to minimal. Most libraries will also do inter-library loan for materials that are not available locally. Reading books with children about a wide variety of subjects is a wonderful teaching tool.

State Guidelines

Each United State has guidelines to follow if schooling children at home. State standards are listed on each website. State guidelines tell what is expected for each child at each grade level. This is outlined by subject or grade on site. This is a wonderful tool to guide the family in what the children should be learning at a specific grade level.

Free Home School Resources

Free home school resources are available on the internet as well as by mail. The information highway is a wonderful thing for home school families. Lesson plans are available online as well as requests for free classroom materials. EBooks as well as online courses are searchable on the internet.

Co-op Workshops

Some home school families allow children to attend co-ops. Co-ops are similar to a classroom setting in which a teacher is instructing a group of children. Home school families may also share in teaching on different days.

Keeping the cost of education down is a wonderful way to save money. A small amount of preparation can go a long way. A quality education at home does not have to be expensive.
