Paraben is preservative that are generally found in cosmetics (FDA.gov). If you are like most, you probably have never heard of them. While they are still being studied, you should be aware that scientists have started to possibly link paraben to certain cancers, although this may not be the case.

According the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) these preservatives have been found in breast cancer tissue. However, before jumping to any conclusions it needs to be seen if there is any conclusive evidence linking the preservatives to the cancer. Accordingly, the study showed that paraben acts like estrogen, they have less activity then actual estrogen. The general conclusion is that this particular preservative is safe to use according the FDA.

If you are concerned or have a history of breast cancer in your family, there is the old adage, better safe then sorry. There are plenty of cosmetic companies that have paraben free products. Of course, being aware of what is in your cosmetics could be just as important as knowing what is in your food. Awareness is key to healthy living.
