Ten Tips for Conserving Water

August 16, 2013

Water is extremely important to maintain a healthy life and it is also used to carry out a wide range of daily chores around our houses and lawns. Due to overpopulation and careless wastage, the water resources around the world are becoming scarce. It is important to use this essential source of life carefully and in a calculated manner.

Here are some tips that will help you to conserve water around the house:

  1. While Brushing - Leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth is a very common habit among a lot of people and it wastes about 6 liters of water per minute. Turning the tap off while brushing can save a lot of water and help you in controlling the utility bills.

  2. For Cleaning and Watering - Avoid using fresh water to water your plants and cleaning your car and using it around the house. Instead, get a drainpipe installed and collect water to use for carrying out such tasks.

  3. For Flushing - Ask for a cistern displacement device from a water service provider. By placing such a device in your toilet, you can cut down on the amount of water consumed every time during flushing.

  4. Taking a Shower - A significant amount of water is lost while you are taking that long and luxurious shower. Cut back on the time you spend under the shower and save about 10 liters of water per minute.

  5. Leaky Taps - Do you have dripping taps around the house that need fixing? Get them repaired immediately as one leaky pipe can waste up to 15 liters of water a day. This amount can become 5,500 liters of wasted water per year.

  6. Drinking Water - Leaving the tap running while you wait for cold water to drink can waste a lot of water during the day. Instead of keeping that cold tap running, you can fill a jug or water bottle and keep it in the refrigerator; this will help you cut back on water wastage.

  7. Installing Water-Efficient Products - There are a lot of water efficient products available, getting them installed can help you reduce your water bills and conserve water around the house. The most common ones include water-efficient taps and faucets, shower heads, washing machines, toilets and dishwashers.

  8. While Washing - Use washing machines only when you have a full load to wash. Otherwise, it will consume huge amounts of water resulting in increased utility bills.

  9. Watering with Water Cans - While watering your plants use a watering can as it consumes less amount of water as compared to a hosepipe. A hosepipe consumes up to 1,000 liters of water when used for an hour.

  10. For Reduced Evaporation During Watering - Also, try and water your plants in the early morning or late afternoon as it will reduce the amount of evaporation and require less amount of water.
Using the above mentioned tips can help you save a considerable amount of water in and around your house and also help you in keeping your utility bills under control. You can also learn more about Water Conservation Around the House, and more Ways and Reasons to Conserve Water.
