Great Green Idea: Green Living: The Best Ways to Save Water

The Best Ways to Save Water

Water conservation and access to safe water are becoming huge issues all across the world and even in areas where it rains abundantly it is a very wise idea to try and cut back on your water consumption.

In the last half century the world has tripled its fresh water demands and the need is currently increasing at 64 billion cubic meters every year. If we see that an average citizen in the UK uses around 160 liters of water every day and that in the developing world up to 80% of diseases can be directly attributed to a lack of clean, healthy water it is clear that this is an issue which has several aspects to it.

Fortunately, there are some very simply and cost effective ways to cut back on your water consumption which are well worth considering:

1. Choose an ecologically friendly shower head. Did you know that a shower head which mixes water with air can give you the same satisfying clean while using substantially less water? The initial cost of the change will be quickly recovered in lower water bills.

2. Get a new toilet. Old fashioned toilets tend to use a lot more water when flushed, when compared with modern designs. A good choice is one which has two buttons on the top of it. This means that you can choose the level of flushing power you need and make a significant water saving.

3. Add inserts to your faucets. When you open your faucet a lot more water than you actually need usually coming pouring out. The excess water then runs down the wash basin and adds to the world's water wastage. You can avoid this in a way which is so incredibly easy that you will wonder why you haven't done it before and why it is someone which is still not as common as it should be. You simply buy a small, inexpensive faucet insert and add it to the wash basin, instantly cutting the flow of water.

4. Repair any leaks or drips in your home. A little drip here and a small leak there probably don't look like much in the grand scheme of things. However, if we all took the responsibility of sorting out these water problems then it would add up to a reasonable amount of water saved every year all across the world. Getting a plumber in to sort out an annoying leak is actually usually a lot cheaper than you might think and is well worth the effort in the long run.

5. Improve the system you use for heating water. If you have an old, inefficient water heating system then let me run a scenario past you to see if it seems familiar. You are all set for a nice, warm shower and you start the water running. Unfortunately, the water that comes out is not as warm as you need it to be and you stand there trembling in the cold waiting for it to heat up. Sounds familiar? A more efficient system can heat your water more quickly, making you waste less water and save some energy at the same time.
