The Long Green Miles: Eco-Friendlier Travels

As many get ready to take a vacation some wonder if an eco-friendly way to travel is possible. Traveling and saving the environment is possible. Fuel economy and carbon footprint are two phrases many travelers are considering. Everyone wants to save money in the tough economic times, and most are trying to find ways to green. However many do not think about how easy it can be when traveling. Continue reading to find out how to save money and Earth while taking that long deserved break.

First, carbon footprint needs to be defined. This means the amount of energy something takes and how the environment is affected. Simply put, every action a person does and everything made affects the surrounding areas. When traveling, think about fuel economy. Travel by public transportation if possible. Buses and trains leave fewer pollutants because of mass transit. Airplanes use massive amounts of fuel during takeoff and landing, so if air travel is planned fly direct when possible. Of course the option to drive to a destination is also a good idea. Many automobiles today are considered eco-friendly. If traveling by car consider renting a vehicle big enough to accommodate everyone instead of taking several smaller cars. The less exhaust fumes produced means a smaller carbon footprint left and a healthier environment.

Next consider traveling to a destination closer to home. With a little research one can find an interesting place to visit close to home. For example, a family in Dallas, TX can have as much fun in Galveston instead of going to Florida to visit the beach. This saves money and Earth at the same time. When traveling keep in mind lodging. Many motels are now implementing "go green" aspects. Consider a family room stay instead of several rooms. When packing, although travel size toiletries sound good avoid the impulse. Travel size may sound more economical, but this is not the case. It actually takes more energy and materials to produce these items. These small items take up a lot more room because people need more than a dot of these items. Instead take the full size version instead. Less to pack means less baggage. The fewer bags packed leads to fewer added weight which in turns means better fuel economy. Drivers can also help the environment by regular maintenance of the vehicle. Proper tire inflation, regular oil changes, and regular tune ups will help car owners be more eco-friendly.

With a little planning, some research, and being responsible a person can travel while being eco-friendly. Consider public transit whenever possible. Fly direct to save time and fuel. Reduce the carbon footprint left behind by staying close to home, taking less baggage, buying full size instead of travel size toiletries, and traveling together instead of separate cars. Proper maintenance of a vehicle will boost fuel economy. By taking a few simple steps a person can help the environment without being labeled as a radical or as a maniac. Consider this before the next great adventure scheduled.
