Great Green Idea: Green Fashion: The Most Popular Green Fashion Designers and How They Do It

The Most Popular Green Fashion Designers and How They Do It

The clothing design business is chocked full of creative men and women who dedicate their craft to the promotion of green fashion. Eco friendly clothes for men, women and children are showing up on runways all over the world each year. The designers mix their commitment to the planet with creativity to make their own unique eco fashion statement.

The Winner

Designer Gretchen Jones recently won top honors on the popular fashion television show Project Runway. This natural clothing designer beat out other contestants who others thought were sure to win. One of the judges was quoted as saying she was favored because of the marketability in her clothing designs. She was the only contestant that created earth friendly and sustainable fashion; which she combined with a tasteful minimalist style that eventually won over the judges. Throughout the season, Ms. Jones purchased overrun fabric to make the outfits for the challenges.

Spread the Word

National Resources Institute eco fashion designer Satish Sika sent the message about the environment around the world by stitching hundreds of earth friendly slogans into yard long pieces of eco fabric. The cloth is being used to advocate such efforts as the reduction of global warming and climate change. Satish Sika was supported in her by dozens of famous celebrities in India, including television and film stars. Their quotes, such as "Help this project and save our earth" by superstar Amitabh Bachchan, were weaved into the fabric pieces. The hand woven fabric is made of eco friendly silk. The piece is traveling the world and is exhibited in schools to promote sustainability.

Functional Green Fashion

Norweigan designer Leila Hafzi, who has been designing eco-friendly apparel since 1997, launched a new collection called Leila. The every day wear includes shirts, dresses, belts and other functional pieces all made from organic cotton. Over the years she has created clothing made from natural and fair trade fabrics which include outerwear and even wedding dresses. She is continuing this trend to create practical, sustainable clothing at affordable prices. This ethic has made her a well known name in the eco-fashion world. When she first began designing she stated that one of her primary goals was to introduce earth friendly, ethical trade to the fashion industry on a global scale.

Natural Clothing at the Altar

Harper Della-Piana was once a well known celebrity clothing designer as well as film and television costume designer. She is currently the proud creator of SEAMS Bridal Couture & Partywear, which features custom handmade bridal and bridesmaids dresses made with natural fibers and all organic materials. Her New England studio is a reflection of her commitment to the environment. The studio is lit with LED lighting and the clothing is not manufactured with industrial machinery. In addition, all of the packaging she uses is recycled and reusable. One of her latest creations is a line of unique wedding apparel called Wrapture. The 100% natural fiber dresses are designed to be wearable even after the nuptials.
