Great Green Idea: Green Travel: Travel Green

Travel Green

Green living implies that you travel green as well. Green travel often refers to how you travel when looking for, traveling to, or staying at vacation destinations. We however, travel on a daily basis so you can endeavor to travel green wherever you are going.

Traveling Green Everyday

Whenever possible, take a chance and walk, don't ride. Even if you can't ditch the commute to work, you can find ways to walk at other times. Instead of driving to the neighborhood park, gather the kids and walk there. If you need to go to the neighborhood store for a small shopping trip, put the keys away and walk (don't forget your reusable grocery bags). You can also hop a bus or train to work or to run errands. You'll put your wallet on a much needed diet from gas prices and become greener and greener all the more. If you'd like, bike. Biking is good exercise and really is a reliable source of transportation, especially when it is a nice sunny day outside.

The Green Road Trip

Flip the script on your yearly road trip. Traveling green is termed ecotourism or sustainable travel. When getting the family ready for your yearly excursion take these methods to travel green. Can you forget about taking the car or SUV all together? Amtrak is a cheap and eco-friendly way to travel. A few perks of Amtrak-children 12 years and younger can travel for half price. On a side note, adult tickets can be as low as $33.00 for a round trip, depending on where you are traveling from and to. Find an eco-friendly hotel to stay in. Websites like, Out Traveler and Environmentally Friendly Hotels, give a comprehensive list of green hotels across the United States. Look for green hotels that offer a discount. You can also take the family on a green vacation. Find travel destinations that cater to ecotourism. You can take the family to visit national parks, hiking or visit a small community that literally lives off the land. It will be a learning experience and everyone will have good green time.

Green Cars

In the beginning, green cars were greeted with much skepticism. Now we are starting to see more eco-friendly cars on the road. Buying a green ride may not be an option for you but if you are in the market for going green with your automobile consider buying a hybrid or biodiesel vehicle. Hybrids like the Prius, get about 50 miles to the gallon and are quiet with a smooth ride. They are cute to boot and look like your traditional Camry or other sedans. A biodiesel vehicle is run on a combination of diesel and vegetable oil. Biodiesel cars release lower emissions. They are also versatile vehicles, as they can switch between regular diesel and biodiesel fuel for times when a biodiesel refueling station isn't near.
