Great Green Idea: Green Products: Use Rain Barrels

Use Rain Barrels

Collecting rainwater in rain barrels is not an uncivilized practice used by people located in an area without a water system. It is a simple and efficient method for helping protect the environment and reducing your water bill expenses.

The practice of harvesting rainwater with barrels can be applied by almost anyone who lives in a house in an area where it rains moderately every now and then. It doesn't really matter whether you live in the suburbs or in the countryside, nor does having access to a water system makes rain barrels useless. Rain water is devoid of many of the chemicals that the pipe water contains, making it a really valuable resource.

The water collected in rain barrels can be used in multiple ways: for watering gardens and lawns, various use within the house, or, after a treatment with a home filtration system, for drinking.

Rain water is by far best used for watering landscaping. It is free of chemicals such as fluoride and chlorine, and of many minerals. This makes it excellent for plants and vegetables, and quite likely the best water you can use in your garden. A significant change can be seen in your garden after repeatedly irrigating it with water harvested from rainfall: the plants and vegetables will look healthier.

Water systems might be more practical, but because they use special chemicals their water tends to affect the soil of your garden in a negative way, which in turn typically makes trees and plants more vulnerable to disease. And while trees and plants are by their nature resilient against common diseases if they have enough water and a good soil, continually supplying them with chemically treated water weakens them. But think not only of the vegetation in your garden, but also of the bees and other insects that live in it. Everything in nature is interconnected, and if the soil is becoming unhealthy then every living creature in the area, the tiniest included, will be one way or another affected.

Rain water can be easily collected from the roof of your house, with little to no effort on your side - just the acquisition of a barrel and its placement accordingly. If your roof is clean, then you can be assured that the water you collect will stay fairly pure, free of contaminants.

In the end, rain barrels can help you collect excellent water for the soil and use it to maintain the health of your garden and lawn. You can buy them at the local do-it-yourself/gardening shop or online, at a typically low price that makes them a well-worth investment. Rain barrels are just one of the many accessible solutions out there for a greener life.
