Great Green Idea: Green Energy: Water Consumption - How to Waste Less Water

Water Consumption - How to Waste Less Water

Water is a necessity in our everyday life. We use it for drinking, cleaning, and other purposes. However, there are times when our water consumption may reach a very high and unreasonable level. This may be due to increase in the number of individuals in our household which consequently can explain the increase in water consumption. The problem arises when this is not the case and instead, negligence and a lack of self-discipline when using water are the main factors for increased in water consumption.

While the bathroom is the main place in our house where we arguably consume the most amount of water, the kitchen is also a primary location where water is being used on a regular basis. We use water in the kitchen for drinking, for cooking, and for cleaning the dishes. In order to cut down on water consumption in the kitchen, it is important to remember these 5 tips:

* Observe Self-Discipline When Washing the Dishes

Most of us wash our dishes with running water from the faucet. This practice can be costly because it can result to an increase in water consumption that can otherwise be prevented. Be disciplined enough to just fill a small bucket or container with water and turn off the faucet afterwards when you are washing the dishes in order to prevent inefficient use of water for cleaning.

* Wash by Bulk

When washing the dishes, make it a practice to wash by bulk. Washing the dishes one at a time can cause you to unconsciously increase your water consumption. By washing the dishes by bulk, you can save more water since you will efficiently be able to wash more dishes with lesser amount of water.

* Skip Pre-Rinsing

Pre-rinsing before washing your dishes with a dishwasher can significantly increase your water consumption. Purchase a dishwasher powerful enough to be able to clean your dishes thoroughly even without pre-rinsing them. A good dishwasher with anti-bacterial action can help you cut down on your water consumption in the kitchen.

* Reuse Water Whenever Possible

The excess water you used for rinsing the dishes can be reused to water the plants or to pre-rinse your car when you are going to clean it. Another alternative is to collect rainwater and use this for cleaning purposes which can effectively cut down your water consumption in the kitchen.

* Fix Leaky Faucets Immediately

Ignoring leaky faucets can result to increased water consumption over time. You are wasting potentially hundreds of gallons of water if you leave a leaky faucet unfixed for days. It is also important to make sure that faucets are totally shut off since this can also cause your water consumption to increase as time goes by.
