Great Green Idea: Green Fashion: Wear Layers Instead of Using Heaters

Wear Layers Instead of Using Heaters

Wearing layers instead of using heaters to maintain a comfortable body temperature in your house in cold weather is from an ecologist standpoint preferable. Heaters consume energy which most of the time doesn't come from renewable energy sources, therefore leading to greenhouse gas emissions one way or another. In addition, heaters, regardless of their type, cost money, while a conventional heating system brings a monthly heating bill which in the cold seasons can be depressing.

Even though wearing layers helps save money and encourages a greener life, heaters will still be necessary to some extent. It is important to understand that is all about striking a fine balance between your dress and your reliance on heaters.

Layering is the most efficient way to protect your body from cold and to keep its temperature stable. Learn how to do it.

Three basic layers

1. The first layer of cloths should be made from a natural fiber, because it is directly in contact with the skin. It must allow your skin to breathe, while fitting closely. Also, it should absorb moisture. This layer must be highly comfortable; you should simply forget that you're wearing it.

2. The second layer should be loose-woven, so that the cold air can pass through it and get warmed before it reaches the skin. The materials from which it is made should preferably be a mix between natural and synthetic fibers.

3. The third layer should keep most of the cold at bay. This is why it must be made from fibers that have been woven together tightly. The fibers can be either synthetic or natural, it doesn't matter as long as they can keep warm.

Layers in details * Underwear

Even though thermal underwear is preferable for cold climates, in a home environment they are not a must. Any underwear that fits closely to the body will do, as long at it is made from natural fabrics that do not lead to skin irritation and that are soft enough to make the wearer feel comfortable at all times.

* Easy-to-wear home clothing

This layer must also be comfortable and allow the wearer to move easily. As a rule, it should keep warm without being too bulky.

* Extra pieces

Here comes into play a bulky garment that you would not usually wear at home but while you're out, such as a sweater. Select an item that keeps warm but that is not an encumbrance to wear.

Wearing layers helps reduce heating expenses and energy consumption. It is the opposite of wearing short pants and a t-shirt in the middle of the winter at home while the heating system is set at maximum, but it does not mean that one should shut down the heating altogether and put on an overcoat. It is all about finding a balance and using both layers of clothing and heaters reasonably to maintain a stable body temperature.
