Great Green Idea: Green Energy: What Green Energy Can Do For You

What Green Energy Can Do For You

Green energy, also known as sustainable energy, is created from sources other than fossil fuels. These sources are considered eco friendly when they originate from a resource that does not contribute to the pollution of the environment or depletion of its resources. This is important because there is a real risk that so many resources for energy will be depleted that there will not be enough to meet the needs of future generations.

Q: What are fossil fuels and how does their use affect the environment?

A: Fossil fuels are formed by resources from nature. They include coal, natural gas and petroleum. The use of fossil fuels leads to air, water and industrial pollution. Industrial pollution is the major cause of acid rain; which occurs when sulfur oxides are released in the air. Acid rain causes water pollution that damages crops and is poisonous to animals. The use of coal and oil also become serious hazards to the environment because of accidental spills. At the same time, natural resources are depleted from harvesting these resources for electricity.

Q: If fossil fuels are not used, what are alternative sources of energy?

A: Three basic eco friendly energy sources are sun, wind and water. Solar (sun) energy is an eco friendly energy source most commonly harvested by trapping heat and light energy into electricity. This electricity is fed into a grid that sends power into homes and businesses. Wind energy is captured by a windmill that spins a turbine; this creates energy which is sent through a generator and changed to electricity. Water is used to create energy by using dams to make what is known as hydro energy.

Q: Does green energy have an affect on my health?

A: Air pollution is known to greatly aggravate symptoms in people with respiratory problems such as asthma and allergies. Breathing polluted air has shown to be a direct link to lung cancer and heart problems. There has been studies that have suggested that the tiny particles in polluted air could be the cause of tens of thousands deaths related to diseases of the heart and lungs. In addition, ongoing research suggests the potential harmful health affects caused by global climate changed.

Q: Does becoming green energy help my finances?

A: Homes that use energy saving appliances and common sense energy saving strategies can see a decrease in energy bills almost immediately. Automobiles that are maintained properly or are fuel efficient save money on gas. Going green with regard to energy is also reflected in the cost for health care, traveling and entertainment.

Q: What can I do to become more eco friendly?

A: Keep an open mind and look for ways to save energy. Start at home by purchasing energy efficient appliances and weatherproofing, if at all possible. Turn off lights that are not needed and unplug sources of phantom energy. Make environmentally conscious purchases when comes to cars, clothing and traveling. Purpose to learn more and then do more as it relates to the environment. Be mindful that no gesture is too small and that the fight is constant.
