Almost nobody dares to challenge the opinion that the importance and availability of green products and technologies is going to improve in the future. However, many skeptics note that many green technologies remain very expensive, especially when compared to their regular counter-parts. In this article, we are going to take a closer look at that problem.
Undoubtedly, it is hard to promote and sell products that are more expensive than others without offering a substantial amount of added value. And, quite honestly, many green products are not even of the same quality as their normal counter-parts. Many polls suggest, for example, that a lot of people would buy an all-electric car if it was just a bit better and cheaper. But car manufacturers simply cannot reduce the price right now for a number of reasons. For example, the manufacturing process of normal cars has been in use for quite a long time and its replacement can be very time-consuming, which drives the price up.
The Future
Is the situation going to change? Well, unless something surprising happens, it seems that it is. The mechanisms that affect the final price of a product are well-known and they all apply here. The most important issue, of course, are the manufacturing costs. And those costs almost always decline over time. Furthermore, the final price of a product is always pushed down when a new company enters the market. Higher demand can also affect the price, as companies are able to cut the profit margins without decreasing their overall profits.
However, this process simply cannot happen quickly. Companies usually cannot enter new markets in a matter of days, since they have to set up new factories and adopt new manufacturing processes. Worldwide demand does not grow very quickly either. The fact that there are many viable alternatives available right now also slows the entire process dramatically.
All in all, it can be said that there is no need to worry about the fact that green products seem to remain expensive despite all the good press and reception. You can probably still remember the time when there were basically no all-electric cars on the market? Well, it was not that long ago. And yet, here we are, having all-electric cars available for affordable prices. It is not the ideal situation yet, but the market is getting there. And the same can be expected for all green products and technologies.
