Great Green Idea: Green Cleaning: Your Healthy and Eco-friendly Kitchen

Your Healthy and Eco-friendly Kitchen

A healthy kitchen is one that is cleaned right way. One of the worst things that you can do to a space (especially a space where meals are prepared) is to flush it down with chemical cleaners. There is study after study that point to chemical contamination as the cause for a host of ailments from headaches to hair loss, and in some cases, cancer.

Chemicals and the kitchen just do not go well together. There are better greener ways to get and keep your kitchen healthy. You can replace every chemical right now in your kitchen with a healthy natural alternative that will work just as well without the worry.

Vinegar: the Miracle CleanerJust about everyone has a bottle of white vinegar in their pantry. Even if you don't you can go and buy a bottle for less than a buck. Vinegar is one of those multi duty liquids; it is great on a salad and can leave a streak free shine on your counter top and stainless steel appliances. As a matter of fact if you have any type of natural stone counters in your kitchen vinegar is the recommended cleaning agent to keep the stone clean.

A good mixture to use to clean your counters is one part white vinegar to three parts water. The vinegar scent disappears as soon as the solution is dry. This solution not only cleans but it also disinfects.

To make the solution a bit tougher you can heat it up a bit than use it on stuck on grime and grease; it will cut right through it. You can also use this solution to clean your kitchen windows to leave a streak free shine.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another natural cleaner that has a bit of abrasive action that can easily scrub stains away in your sink or on your stove top. Make a paste of baking soda and water and allow the paste to sit on the surface you are cleaning for about ten minutes. Once the paste has hardened, wipe it away with a damp sponge.

Olive Oil and Lemon Juice

If you want to give your wood cabinets a lift instead of using aerosol furniture polish in a can, make your own furniture polish with olive oil and lemon juice. Simply mix one cup of olive oil with a half a cup of lemon juice. This is a two step process; first you apply the mixture to a soft cloth and wipe the cabinets down, and then you use a clean cloth to polish the cabinets. The lemon cuts through built-up grease while the olive oil nourishes the wood.

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream can be safely used in the kitchen to clean chrome, glass top stoves, ceramic cooking surfaces, and stainless steel. This is a non-toxic alternative to caustic cleaning agents. Keep your kitchen healthy and avoid chemicals by using all natural cleaners that come from your pantry. You will save money while protecting yourself and your family from dangerous chemicals that are bad for you and the environment.
