Everything we do impacts the environment. Gone are the days when we can just sit back without a thought for our action. The numerous and severe tornadoes have been tearing through the south leaving many people displaced and others dead. These tornadoes are our wake up call to take better care of our ecosystem.
Environmental awareness campaigns have resulted in the emergence of many ecofriendly (green) products. The following are ways we can contribute to a healthier ecosystem and lifestyle.
Grocery Bags:
Try planning trips to the grocery store and carrying reusable grocery bags with you. This reduces the amount of plastic that goes back into the landfills and reduces the gas we use per week. There are times however, that the trips to the grocery store are spontaneous and we have no alternative but to use the store plastic bags. To solve this dilemma, I suggest that we reuse the plastic bag as trash can liner?s, or to pick up after one?s pet. Some stores even have recycle programs where you can return the plastic bags.
Garbage Disposal:
There are great biodegradable garbage bags available on the market today which reduces the amount of plastic that remains in the landfill. Recycle, recycle, recycle, and learn the days and drop-off points for recycle materials in your area. It may be time consuming but every little effort makes a difference in our environment.
Paper and Plastic Products:
Passing on paper products is a great way to be ecofriendly but it is not always practical. What is practical however is to use disposable products such as Paper, Plates, napkins and cutlery made with recycled material or biodegradable material. These come in wonderful shapes, size and designs and have the added benefit of being good for the environment. For everyday uses replace paper products with washable items such as cloth Napkins, Kitchen towels, and plates made from alternative material.
Reusable Bottles and Cups
Reusable cups and bottles are your friend and can save you money. There are a few coffee shops and Deli?s in many neighborhoods that give customers a discount for using your own cups or thermos. Try doing this and you will see the saving in your pocket.
Ecofriendly Kitchen Cleaning Agents:
As environmental awareness increases many companies are being socially responsible and creating environmentally friendly alternatives. Now, there are many effective ecofriendly & nontoxic alternatives to the products we use every day e.g. dishwashing liquid, dishwashing powder, multipurpose cleaning solution etc.
Ecofriendly Cookware & Bake ware:
Can you believe it ?even the pots that we use can harm not only the environment but our bodies as well. One of the most harmful things in cookware we have to be aware off is PFOA. PFOA this is the coating that makes many traditional cookware and Bake ware nonstick.
In order to conserve energy and save on gas choose pots the right size pot that fits the amount of food being cooked and remember to put on the cover. A covered pot cooks fast, more evenly and leaves less mess to clean up.
